Pancake Breakfast in Roseburg

Taking the place of the fireworks fund raiser this year, the Roseburg Optimist Club will host a Rock'n Roll'n Pancake Breakfast on July 9.  They say it's less work and more fun, plus the club has signed on some sponsors that are bound to make it a great foodie experience for all: Shari's Restaurant, Dutch Brothers Coffee, and Umpqua Dairy.  Sounds like a great breakfast combo to me!

The club is looking for kitchen help, setter-uppers, servers, cleaner-uppers, money collectors and entertainers. Yes! Entertainment will be as plenty as the pancakes. Stop by Riverforks Park, July 9, 8:00 am to 11:00 am and enjoy.

The Three Rs of Membership: It's not what you think!

The Optimist Club of Roseburg, Oregon marks the southernmost boundary of our very large Pacific Northwest District. Because of the distance, we don't often see members from the Roseburg Optimist Club at our gatherings.

Too bad - they have some great ideas they could share with other Optimist Clubs like the Santa Hotline, the Halloween Closet where children can borrow a costume, and the newest program, found hidden on the back page of their most recent bulletin:

The Roseburg Optimist Club Referral Rewards Program.

It's self explanatory.  Please click on the picture to enlarge and after you've read it, please tell us what you think by using the comment section below.

Do you need new members in your Optimist Club? Would a Referral Rewards Program work for you?

Roseburg Optimists are proud of Troop 225

Boy Scout Troop 225 is chartered through the Roseburg Optimist Club. Beth Edwards, Leader and liaison with the troop and Optimist Club says, "These boys do a lot of service projects for the community and have a lot of fun doing it."

They recently added five new scouts to the troop, bringing the roster to 25. Shown here are Tristan Case, Nathan Lund, Braden Abbott, Isaac Beery, and Bailey Wentz.

Thanks to Becky Holm, Editor, Roseburg Optimist Club Newsletter, for the picture.

Ho, Ho, Hello!

Here's a pretty simple Christmas project that your Optimist Club might do even on short notice.

The Roseburg Optimist Club has set up a hotline straight to Santa Claus. He's a really busy guy during this time of the year so the hours for the Roseburg area hook-up is rather limited; but he hopes to hear from as many children as possible on Tuesday, December 14, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Why not give Santa's scheduler a buzz and see if you can arrange a time in your community?

See the Roseburg Hotline to Santa flyer here.

Planning a year of service for your Optimist Club

This is my favorite time of year. I know it's hot and summer is almost over as is the current administrative year for Optimist Clubs, but what makes this time of year more special than others is the opportunity for everyone in your Optimist Club to work together.

As you prepare for a big finish to 2009-2010 and ready for the transition of officers on October 1, there should be two teams working together to make one big, happy service club. Current officers are interested in adding members, recognizing supporters, celebrating success and most important of all ensuring continuity of the great work that has been accomplished. Incoming officers are busy making plans and getting ready to lead. Incoming and outgoing officers need to be communicating so that the transition is smooth, processes are improved and projects are carried forward that need to be carried forward.

All clubs have a different way of doing this. Some allow the Club president to make all committee appointments. Others request volunteers and some even have lifetime appointments as committee chairs. All work, to some extent, but I have to tell you that I prefer a more purposeful planning process.

I think that the Roseburg Optimist Club has a great approach. The Board of Directors looks at all of the programs for the year and identifies what they want to tackle in the coming year. Then they take their suggestions to a regular Club meeting and ask the members what events interest them.  With support of the Board and members secure, then and only then, they circulate a list to have people sign up to be chairpersons.

This process provides them a written annual calendar of events and a Work Plan to guide their efforts.  Click here to take a look at the Roseburg Optimist Club 2010/2011 Coming Events and let us know if you like what you see.  Thanks to Rheanna Mosier for sharing with us.

Another club heard from

Thanks to Becky Holm, Board Member and bulletin editor for the Roseburg Optimist Club, I was able to add another entry to our bulletins section today with the addition of The Rock.

Today the Roseburg Optimist Club is busy celebrating their charter date with a picnic at Becker Winery.  Happy Anniversary!

The Roseburg Optimist Club has been rebuilding this year and they are full of optimism and enthusiasm.  Please take a look at The Rock and see how they are encouraging members to be involved with programs and even with the Optimist International PGI Program.  According to Becki, the PGI Program is an easy way to build professional skills for free or to be exact, for the cost of membership into an Optimist Club.

I am so excited to have Becky Holm, Kelly Janzen, Fran Bounds and others engaged with the District on behalf of the Roseburg Optimist Club.  My thanks go out to every member for all you do in your community to bring out the best in children.
