Winter junior golf notes

pnw optimist clubs golf

Today's Christmas story offering arrives straight from the Optimist International office and the Optimist Golf program.

We're somewhat familiar with the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. Junior golfers from Optimist Clubs in the PNW District participate in tournaments in British Columbia and Oregon in order to advance to this prestigious, annual event.

Did you know that the Optimist Junior Golf program includes more?

  • There are tournaments held throughout the year with the Optimist Junior Golf Tour. Locations include Myrtle Beach, SC, Fort Worth, TX, Hilton Head Island, SC, Kingsville, ON, and Denver, CO.
  • There is a Tournament of Champions held in November at the PGA National Resort and Spa, Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

There are also opportunities for junior golfers to be recognized for scholarship and and service. Junior golfers may apply for two special awards and if selected they will receive an exemption into the 2018 Optimist Championship, tournament entry which includes golf, hotel accommodations and meals, plus a $1,000 scholarship. Please click below for more information:

Junior golfers may be involved in the Optimist International Golf Program even if the local Optimist Club does not participate. However, we encourage you and your Optimist Club to be involved.

The PNW District, unfortunately, does not include the tournament in its annual budget.

This year, a number of local businesses and individuals were hole sponsors and tournament sponsors, providing the cash needed to support the tournament and give the opportunity for golfers to advance.

The Beaverton Optimist Club joined in as a Silver Sponsor.

Many thanks to the Hillsboro Optimist Club for their ongoing support of this important Optimist International program.

Promise to live the Creed 1.9

This week we want to highlight one of Optimist International's growing youth sports programs and what better way is there to do it than to recognize the veteran junior golf chairperson from the Vancouver, BC Optimist Club: Harry White.

Harry has promised to live the Optimist Creed this year, and every year. He says his favorite line of the Optimist creed is "To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own." He goes on to explain:

"This is a particularly good fit for junior golfers as in the Optimist Junior Linkster Tour program we have ages 4 to 18 (Optimist International golf is age 9-18) and all level of player take part, with the more experienced and skilled golfers take on the role of mentor to the younger "grass roots" beginners. And, the converse has also proven to be the case, with highly skilled younger junior golfers, providing inspiration to the older players with their significant achievements at golf. Children enjoy the ancient and honourable game - and it is because it is fun.  Northwest juniors all report what a great time they had and fun!

Optimists in Vancouver, BC became involved with junior golf in 1979 when our Club was asked to organize a competition to qualify golfers to compete in the Optimist Junior World Golf Championship, held annually in San Diego, California, at the Torrey Pines GC and other San Diego area courses. Optimist volunteers in the area would provide housing and transportation to the golf courses. This was a great success and impacted the interest in junior golf in B.C. and the Northwest significantly. Tiger Woods started playing in the mid 1980's and provided another boost to Optimist Junior golf and golf in general. The Optimist Junior World Championships saw growth from 300 players to over 600 players and the challenge of Optimists to keep up grew increasingly difficult. In 1993, Optimist International decided to conduct their own 100% Optimist International Junior Championship and began play in Florida in 1994, where the competition has remained ever since. (The Junior World event in San Diego continues also but with other sponsors). Junior golfers from all over the Optimist world qualify and take part yearly in both events, with Optimist International also operating a special "Optimist Champions" event in November, annually, and other satellite events in the Spring time. I highly recommend that each Optimist Club promote the junior golf opportunities there.

The link to Optimist International Junior Golf at http://www.optimist.org/e/juniorgolf_delete/about1.cfm  has video and other information that puts out graphic evidence of children having fun and enjoying the unique Optimist junior golf program."

It's easy to see that Harry has a passion for the Optimist Junior Golf Program and the Junior Linksters. Our thanks go to him for his leadership throughout the years. When tournament dates for 2017 are solidified, they will be shown on this website.

If you want to share how you have promised to live the Optimist Creed, please email a photo here.

Junior golfing, Victoria Optimist Club-style

Bruce Davenport, treasurer, Optimist Club of Victoria shared some pictures this week of youngsters enjoying golf and lunch and basically having fun. Tell me more, I said.

It turns out that the Victoria Optimist Club sponsors an inner city golf program that lets young people experience a sport normally unavailable to them. Through golf, the youngsters also learn personal courtesy and discipline along with skills required.

A golf pro donated his time and gave instructions to the junior golfers and Optimist Club members were available on the course as mentors. It looks like they also got to enjoy the pizza party afterwards!

Thanks for sharing the story, Bruce!

Optimist Junior Golf: fun, rewarding, affordable!

2012 OPTIMIST champions
Marcella Pranovia and Joey Lane
Chris Hill, Chair, Optimist International Junior Golf Championships for the PNW District invites every club to get involved with the  OPTIMIST junior golf tournament this year. He sends the following message:

Dear Optimist Club Presidents,
We are continuing to build our PNW Optimist Junior Golf qualifier tournament.  This tournament allows local youth to compete for a place in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens Florida.   We are currently allowing only one participant in each age category to move on to the championships in Florida.

I’d like to build our local qualifier tournament, currently held at Meriwether National Golf Course in Hillsboro Oregon, to at least 72 participants.  In years prior, we’ve had 35-45.  This is where I need your help.  I’d like to have on member from your club market our qualifier tournament to high schools in your community.   This would mean either emailing or dropping off a flyer to high school golf coaches.  In addition, if your club would like to sponsor a local boy or girl, you could pay for their entry fee into the Qualifier tournament ($75).
 PNW Qualifier Tournament
When:  June 20, 2013
Where:  Meriwether National Golf Course.  Hillsboro, OR
Registration:  https://sites.google.com/site/pnwusoptimistgolf

Contact:  Chris Hill ; 503-780-2570
Due to the size and magnitude of the International competition, this opportunity could change the path of a young person.  Please consider selecting a volunteer to spread the word about our upcoming junior golf tournament.  Visit www.optimist.org/golf for more details on both the local qualifier and the International championships.  Thank you in advance.
 Sincerely,
Chris Hill, PNW District Junior Golf Chairman
503-780-2570

To make it even easier, he's prepared some letters for you to use to inform coaches and others of the event. View and download the letters here:

Let's work together to make this the best district golf tournament ever.

Get your Optimist Club involved in Junior Golf

The US division*qualifying tournament for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship  in the PNW District will be held Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Hillsboro Optimist Club has been organizing this event for a number of years giving young golfers in the Oregon area the opportunity to advance to the OPTIMIST.  District Chair Chris Hill says he would like to see other Optimist Clubs in the district embrace the tournament as a program that they participate in every year.

Optimist Clubs can hold pre-qualifying tournaments and sponsor the winning golfers to attend the District Tournament. Or they can choose to send golfers without holding tournaments. According to Chris, golfers can also enter at-large, without a club sponsor and that is why there are typically a large number of junior golfers in the tournament from Oregon; they learn about it from their golf coach or other members on their golf team at school and register as they would any number of tournaments over the summer. For other states, the distance makes the tournament out of sight and out of mind. That's why a club sponsor is needed to help with promotion.

It's pretty easy:

  • Download the application here
  • Email or mail the applicationto your high school golf coach.
  • Post on the bulletin board at your local golf club.

To get more involved, ask your Optimist Club to support sending two winners, a boy and a girl, to the district qualifying tournament.

For the more ambitious, hold a club-level junior golf tournament. For less than $500 and a day on the golf course, your Optimist Club can hold a tournament and send junior golfers to the district qualifier. Just ask your local golf pro how.

The big prize for district winners is a trip to the PGA National Resort & Spa for the 2013 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships, July 25 to August 4, where they play against more than 600 golfers from around the world.

*In British Columbia, junior golfers participate through the Jr. Linkster program. The qualifying tournament for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships will be held on June 8, 2013. Please contact District Chair Harry White for more information.

Junior golfers advance to the Optimist from BC tournament

From Harry White, Chair, PNW District  OIJGC-Canada

In conjunction with the www.cjga.com , British Columbia division, a successful junior golf qualifying event was held on the weekend of May 19-20, 2012 in Richmond, BC for our PNW District 32 in Canada. Almost 50 golfers took part in the two-day, 36-hole event, and while the spring weather held true on Day one, winter returned for Day 2 and conditions were very challenging, to say the least. No matter to our keen and very optimistic junior golfers. One and all played and enjoyed the experience and chance to go to Canadian and Optimist International Junior Golf championships in Ontario and Florida, respectively.

Some terrific golf was played with the overall Junior champion being Chris CRISOLOGO of Richmond, BC who fired rounds of 67-71 to win the Age 16-18 div.

Girls champion for the Age 15-18 division was Winnie HYUN of Langley, returning very steady scores of 74-75 for a 149 total. And, our very accomplished Tiffany KONG of Vancouver was a fantastic 148 for two days around the Greenacres GC in Richmond.

Those who earned the coveted qualifying spots will move on to play one of junior golf's "Major Junior Championships" at PGA National GC in Florida and to the Fanshawe G&CC in London, Ontario. Our thanks to hardworking Optimists who support these programs and of course the CJGA's Brad, Eric and Helen.

Get involved in Optimist Junior Golf

The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships - PNW District Qualifying Tournaments are being held this year in Oregon and British Columbia. There is still time to participate in the US division, to be held at Meriwether Golf Course, Hillsboro, Oregon, on June 12, 2011.

This picture is really what it is all about; a young man, dressed for success on the golf course, displaying concentration and control and a determination to win.

This picture tells the story just a little more as the junior golfers line up, waiting their turn to tee off. Last year 48 golfers came from Oregon, Washington and Idaho to participate.

They weren't all boys - young ladies showed up as well and proved just as formidable as the young men.

But in the end, first place is awarded to one outstanding golfer in each category: Boys 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-18 and Girls 10-12, 13-14, 15-18.

Don't you want to be involved?
There are different ways that Optimist Clubs or individual golfers may choose to participate.
  1. Optimist Clubs can sponsor junior golfers by paying their registration fees. Only $75!
  2. Optimist Clubs can hold pre-qualifying club-level tournaments and offer as a prize the opportunity to receive paid or partially paid trips to the district tournament.
  3. Individual golfers may choose to participate on their own, without sponsorship.
All golfers must complete the official entry form found at this link: http://goo.gl/8zUL8. Entries must be received by June 6.

More information is available from Chairman and Tournament Director Chris Hill  - 503-780-2570 or 503-640-5363. The Tournament website: https://sites.google.com/site/pnwusoptimistgolf/home

Get involved! Get your Optimist Club involved!
The qualifying district tournaments feed into the coveted Optimist International Junior Golf Championships held from July 20-31 at PGA National Resort and Spa, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Find out more about this awesome opportunity at http://www.optimist.org/golf.
