Beaverton Optimist Club create bulletin boards for the library

The Beaverton Optimist Club has formed a close relationship with the Aloha Community Library. When they host a guest speaker, they present a children's book to the library in the speaker's name. How awesome is that?

As another demonstration of their partnership, they recently created custom-made bulletin boards for the library and presented them to the library board this week. Shown here is Melinda Williamson of the Aloha Community Library accepting the present from Optimist Club member Jack Franklin.

Small and meaningful gestures

The Beaverton Optimist Club recently welcomed Mayor Denny Doyle as their guest speaker and in honor of his presentation, they gave a book to the Aloha Community Library Foundation.

What a great way to benefit the community! In one morning, the Beaverton Optimist Club members heard from "the source" about what was happening and with just a small, but meaningful gesture they were also able to help the library. That sounds like a win-win to me.

Beaverton Optimists help community celebrate 100th anniversary

The Beaverton Optimist Club was on hand at the Business Group's celebration of the City of Aloha's 100th Anniversary.

They set up a table to meet and greet folks; talk about optimism, club projects and fellowship, and  they held a raffle for tickets to Breakfast with the Mayor at the Beaverton Optimist Club meeting on February 2 at the Peppermill Restaurant.

The Peppermill, Beaverton Optimist Club's regular meeting place, is located 17455 SW Farmington Road, Aloha, OR.

Beaverton Optimist Club builds a playground at John Marty Park

The Optimist Club of Beaverton, Oregon has been busy working with the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District to spruce up another park in their community. What's the best way to spruce up a park? With playground equipment, of course!

Last week, when Beaverton Optimist Club president Alan Zehntbauer sent 46 pictures of the project to me, I emailed back that I would get them on the website later in the week. He replied, "Oh, not all of them, but some of them are so darn cute."

I agree, Alan, there are some cute ones and I removed a few; but together, they tell the story. I like them all. Enjoy!

Celebrating Optimist style

Forty-three years ago the Optimist Club of Beaverton, Oregon was chartered and Vern Williams was there. His legacy as a charter member was honored today by his fellow club members as they came together during a regular club meeting to celebrate his 90th birthday.  Writing about the event on Facebook, fellow club member Susan Nordstrom said, "So many turned out to talk so highly about him, he and his beautiful wife Pat had a great time this morning! Just so great to be surrounded by such a great "extended" family of such incredible people!"

Yes, indeed. That is what optimism is all about: sharing our joys and dreams. Happy Birthday Vern from  friends in the Pacific Northwest District.

The Beaverton Optimist Club has a great fondness for bicycles and President Bruce Buffington keeps them engaged with cycling activities in their community.  The latest event was held on Sunday - Bike Beaverton.  According to their official photographer Alan Zehntbauer, Zone 4 Lt. Governor,  Bike Beaverton included your choice of a family friendly ride or a fitness ride with ice cream for everyone at the end.  In the pictures, I noticed an obstacle course for bicycle safety too.

Time for some new members?

Need some more hands to help you with your summer Optimist Club projects?  Then it's time to start adding a few new members to your roster!

The Beaverton Optimist Club installed a new member last week.  Joan Anderson Wells joined the group and it looks like she was inducted in style by President Bruce Buffington. The group also welcomed a guest to their meeting that day, Bud Wells.  Another new member perhaps?  We hope so.

Beaverton student awarded scholarship

The Beaverton Optimist Club observes Optimist International Respect for Law month by awarding a scholarship to a student who plans a career in law enforcement. 

Beaverton Optimist member Marv Thompson reports that the recipient of this year's Dean Mitchell Scholarship was Conner Gilfillan.  Conner plans to attend college at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri to major in criminal justice and minor in theology. He also hopes to play football for Culver-Stockton.  


According to Marv, Conner is a very qualified student who has participated in various activities during his high school career and has a long list of accomplishments.  He aspires to some day become a police officer and at retirement become a chaplain for a police agency.

Spread the word

It was a rainy day in the Portland area today, but that didn't stop the Beaverton Optimist Club from hosting a booth at the Farmer's Market.  According to Lt. Governor Alan Zehntbauer, they sold cinnamon rolls and soda pop and made a little money.  Best of all, they got the word out about the Beaverton Optimist Club with custom designed membership brochures.

What a great way to let your community know about what you do.

Governor visits and learns about Native American flutes

Governor Linda Jackson and Leadership Development Chair Gay Enyeart visited the Beaverton Optimist Club on May 6 where they were treated to breakfast and warm hospitality by Alan Zehntbauer, Lt. Governor, Zone 4 and the members of the Beaverton Optimist Club.  Alan was quick to follow-up with pictures and the club bulletin, the Beabull recording the event.  Enjoy!  

Beaverton Optimist Club members help build a playground

On Saturday, October 11, the Optimist Club of Beaverton, Oregon participated in a playground project with the Tualitin Parks and Recreation Department.  One afternoon, one playground.  Enjoy the photos from Alan Zehntbauer, Lt. Beaverton Optimist Club awards scholarship for public safety

Cesar Rubio, a recent  graduate from Aloha High School, was awarded a $1,000 public safety scholarship from the Optimist Club of Beaverton, Oregon. Rubio plans to attend Portland Community College and pursue a degree in criminal justice. His goal is to become a police officer.

The Beaverton Optimist Club has awarded the scholarship for 15 years in honor of the late Dean Mitchell, a former club officer who was interested in public safety.

The club meets at 7 a.m. Thursdays in the Peppermill Restaurant, 17455 S.W. Farmington Road, Aloha.
